LTCI Academy - "So, what are popup blockers?"

Great question.

In the early days of web technology in the 90's, the term "browser" became descriptive of the kind of program one used to look at web sites. The original design of browsers was such that you could display a single page of information somewhat like a page in a book or magazine, and when you were through with the page you could continue to the next. The major difference in browser technology became known as hyperlinking, and that was the ability of a user to click on key terms or images in a page, and be linked to a page related to that specific term or image.

Not long afterwards, marketers took a huge interest in web site technology, and started looking for ways to make the web a more forceful marketing tool - working with the web browser developers, new technologies were added to the browser, including a "popup" window technology that allowed a website to open a new "window" on the user's computer, Great idea on the surface, and immediately vendors for learning products began using this technology extensively.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bad idea. Advertisers and pornographers over time came to abuse the feature, and as a result, third party vendors began offering programs called "popup blockers" that would stop a new window from opening, unless the computer user actually wanted that to happen.

Today, browsers themselves, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer (most common browser in use today), and Mozilla Firefox both have "built in" popup blockers. They are by default active for all websites, but have an "allow" list capability that provides the user a method of using trusted websites, such as LTCIACADEMY.COM, which use popup windows for legitimate purposes.

Many times you can override popup blocking software by holding down the Ctrl or Shift key when clicking on a link. Be sure to hold that button down until the new window opens. Other times, there may be an Ad Blocking notification at the top right hand of the browser window that can be toggled to allow popups at a particular site. Still others may appear in the system tray (down on the Taskbar where the time displays at the lower right of the screen).
We have posted a page on our website that covers some of the most common software programs and you can access this page here.

Once this software is disabled or overridden while you want to take the course, the course will open properly. By the way, many times people have two or three popup blockers on their system, sometimes without even knowing it. Close all popup software, go back to www.ltciacademy.com and click the Login link.
